The Williamsburg Virginia/James City County Courthouse is illuminated green November 6-12, 2023 as part of Operation Green Light, an initiative between James City County and the Virginia Association of Counties, the National Association of Counties and the National Association of County Veteran Service Officers.
Operation Green Light’s mission is to show support for veterans, as well as raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by many veterans (and their families) and the resources that are available at the county, state, and federal level to assist veterans and their families.
Approximately 200,000 service members transition to civilian communities annually, and given our proximity to many military facilities, James City County is home to many veterans. The County seeks to honor all these individuals who have paid the high price for freedom by placing themselves in harm’s way for the good of all.
Citizens are encouraged to participate by simply changing one light bulb in their house to a green bulb. This can be an exterior light that neighbors and passersby see, or an interior light that sparks a conversation with friends. By shining a green light, we are letting our veterans know that they are seen, appreciated and supported.
While this event is focused around the week of Veterans Day (Nov. 6-12), participants are encouraged to continue shining the light year-round. Participants are encouraged to share their participation on social media using the hashtag #OperationGreenLight.
Once again this Veterans Day, the National Association of Counties (NACo) and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers (NACVSO) invite the nation’s 3,069 counties, parishes, and boroughs to join Operation Green Light and show support for veterans by lighting our buildings green from November 6-12. By shining a green light, county governments and our residents will let veterans know that they are seen, appreciated and supported.
